The nail and screw

Nails and screws are among the oldest inventions and have been used for joining materials together for several thousand years. The nail was much simpler to make and was therefore the most used of the two. The word “nail" comes from Old English and means “metal pin or spike".

Both the nail and the screw belong to the so-called simple machines: the inclined plane, screw, wedge, lever, wheel and pulley have been used since time immemorial to get more power and make various kinds of jobs easier.
