The boat has meant that people can be transported to distant places and trade goods with foreign nations. It can be used in acts of piracy and war, to carry containers and oil — or for sailing holidays and duty free sales.No-one knows how old the boat is, but because we suspect that the first people to arrive in Australia used boats, it must have been at least 40,000 years ago. It has probably been invented in many different places at the same time.

The boat can thank the Greek philosopher, Archimedes and his theory of floatation. It says that if a boat – or anything else – displaces more water than the boat weighs then it will float.
