The ball

People have been playing with balls since the earth was flat. Balls were made of animal bladders, albatross feet or anything that could be made round enough.

Across the globe we play everything from golf and cricket to billiards and baseball. In Sweden football is the biggest. The 3,350 football associations have just over a million members, while hockey has the most ball-shaped arena: The Ericsson Globe.

Which is the biggest ball sport globally? According to the international federations, 500 million people play volleyball and 450 million basketball which therefore beat football which is played by a mere 265 million people. But how many play — and what — in backyards and streets is impossible to measure.
